Christopher Nolan himself say that he "doesn't talk a lot about the previous films because I didn’t make them and they're not mine to talk about, but certainly if you look at Batman Returns with Danny DeVito as The Penguin, eating the fish and everything, there are some extraordinarily disturbing images in that movie. But they're coming at it from a surreal point of view."
He is saying that his interpretation of The Dark Knight is dark and disturbing but in a very different way to Tim Burtons, he says that if you're to remake a film, you have to put your own twist on it and try and set it apart from the others, but that you also can't forget that there have been many Batman films made over the years and in each film he is different.
